The Immune System: Don't Leave Home Without It

By: Dr Robert Gamble

The immune system: Don't leave home without it. Imagine your
reaction when you open a fortune cookie and it reads, "Psychics
will lead dogs to your body." Sort of unnerving, huh? It is, if
you don't first roll over in gut-busting laughter. But, I'm
told, that really did happen... I don't know the reaction of the
person involved, but it could have been a bit uncomfortable.
After all, why do we open the "fortune cookie" to begin with?

Anyway, people can be disturbed by things like that...and
history is replete with such tales. As a physician, what amazes
me is the fact we can be a bit uneasy about superstitious events
but have no problem "leaving our immune systems" at home.

What do I mean? Let me explain.

Pollsters and advertisers tell us people will spend a fortune
getting well, trying to cure or mitigate some disease or
condition but will almost NEVER spend a dime PREVENTING disease
or health conditions. This is a particularly important point
when considering your immune system.

Again, as a physician, I was always amazed when I would tell
someone what to do, as to NOT get sick again. Do you think they
listened? Sometimes. But they ALWAYS spend a lot on getting
well, if possible. That is particularly the case with immune
system problems...and immune system problems are our biggest
health worries, once they "hit" us.

When you go out into the world every day, try to remember you
have an immune system designed to withstand the daily medical
issues that afflict us. But, it needs help. Like any defense
system, it needs replenishing so as to do its vital work. Immune
system malfunction is at the root of most disease conditions.

But, that's the problem. We can be superstitious about things
which have no sound scientific basis to them. But, when warned
about the potential failure of our body's defense and
replenishing system...the immune system, we go on without taking
heed.

The Immune system: Quidquid praecipies, esto brevis.

In case your Latin is a little rusty, "Whatever you teach, be
brief." A wise maxim. So I will herein live up to it. Here goes:
"If your immune system suffers, you will too." Let me repeat
that another way, "If your immune system becomes over active or
under active...you could develop diabetes, cancer, arthritis,
allergies, strep, bronchitis, tuberculosis and a host of immune
system related conditions.

Solution? Well, given the scientific surge in glyconutritional
research, the actual solution to these and many others has been,
for many sufferers, glyconutritional products. Why?
Glyconutrients are the key nutrients designed to strengthen the
immune system. But, why wait to get sick? Did you know that
baby's breast milk is loaded with glyconutrients? Given that,
then it is a big non-surprise that their immune systems are well
nourished and diseases often pass them by while others around
them (including mama) are getting sick!

Did you know many plants (foods/herbs), which people from
varying cultures have known about for centuries, actually aid
the immune system? The following foods have been known for their
"healing properties" over the centuries...and now, because of
the boost given to the immune system of our bodies by the
glyconutrients in them...we know why.

Immune system boosters: Aloe Vera, coconut, Astragalus,
mushrooms (medicinal), Echinacea, some algae, garlic, pectin of
fruits, some herbs, yeasts, maize, breast milk, certain saps,
husks...

Note the fact the immune system can be kept strong so as to
furnish maximum defense when we need it. Why not GET
glyconutrional support for your immune system and PREVENT the
kinds of conditions that bog you down?

Why suffer from multiple bouts of flu and colds? They are due to
an under active immune system.

Why suffer from repeated forays of strep? It too is due to an
under active immune system. Get an immune system boost through
glyconutrition.

How about those ear infections in junior? Ear infections are due
also, in part, to under active immune system conditions. Give
them a boost. Glyconutritionals are non-prescription. They are
also non-toxic (They're foods!).

Are you ready for the allergy season? Allergies are the response
to over active immune systems. Don't groan. Cursing the darkness
never CURED anything. Glyconutrional supplementation modulates
the immune system also. That's a fancy way of saying the immune
system is regulated by the glyconutrients.

What about those of us who have been literally tormented,
embarrassed, fatigued and distressed by acute sinus infections?
Sinusitis is due, in part, to an under active immune system. I
don't have to tell you what a relief PREVENTION would be. NOT
GETTING sinusitis is well worth it. On the other hand, most of
us will continue to wait until our immune systems fail us...we
get sick...miss work...sneezing all the time, excusing ourselves
forever...

All of us see the wisdom in preventing the "let down" our immune
systems will suffer IF we do not provide the nutritional
strength needed, just as surely as not having vitamin C will
ALWAYS result in scurvy. Remember, glyconutrients are NOT new
vitamins, minerals, amino acids or enzymes. They are an entirely
different nutrient. And they are food. Think NON-Prescription.

Of course, prevention is all it is "cracked up to be." We see
some expense (nothing like "sick bills" i.e. days lost at work,
doctor's visits, x-rays, prescriptions, weakness, suffering,
etc.)...We see no apparent results (how do you "see" your immune
system anyway?)...We stay healthy (because we aren't sick to
begin with!)...and we decide there's nothing happening, so we
quit prevention, thinking all is well.

Watch out for fortune cookies.

Does Natural Pain Relief Really Exist?

By: Eddie Tobey

Everyone will suffer pain at some point in their lives. Grim as
this may sound, some pain is necessary - it's a signal from our
brain that something is wrong in our body, something we need to
address to protect our health and well-being. It can be caused
by anything from a dental cavity to a broken bone to a disease.
Once we determine where the pain is coming from, we can diagnose
and address the health problem, thus alleviating the pain.

Sometimes, however, pain isn't done away with so easily - it
remains with us despite all efforts to banish it. This is called
'chronic' pain, distinguishable from 'acute' pain by its
persistence. Common examples of chronic pain include backaches,
migraine headaches, and arthritis.

The most popular treatment for chronic pain are prescription
medications, but these often have adverse side effects ranging
from nausea to fatigue, and can cease to be effective once a
patient builds a tolerance. Acupuncture has been used as a form
of natural pain relief and cure for many chronic conditions for
over two thousand years. Originating in China, acupuncture
involves piercing the skin with thin needles on specific points
of the body. Patients have claimed acupuncture has proven
effective in treating ailments such as neck pain, migraine
headaches, arthritic pain, and even depression.

Herbal remedies offer another time-tested alternative to
conventional therapies, providing natural pain relief to
sufferers without many of the unwanted side effects of
conventional medicines. There usually several herbal treatments
for a particular condition; popular herbal remedies include emu
oil, which can alleviate the pain of arthritis, and good old
Vitamin E, which helps minimize scarring. The downside of herbal
treatments is that they often take longer to achieve noticeable
results; the upside is that you aren't introducing man-made
foreign compounds into your body, and run less risk of side
effects or damaging your overall health.

Although it may sound like well-worn advice with little glitter
or pizzazz, perhaps the best advice is to take care of yourself
- get proper nutrition by eating fewer processed foods and more
fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Take care to get enough
sleep each night, and take time out of each day for exercise -
even simple activities like taking the stairs at work or a walk
around the block go a long way towards improving your health.

Get the Facts on LASIK Eye Surgery

By: Seymour Blue

Are you one of those poor people that can't seem to see as well
as they used to. Are you near sighted or far sighted? Perhaps
you also have astigmatism? If this sounds like you, you may have
thought about LASIK eye surgery. LASIK stands for laser assisted
in situ keratomileusis. LASIK eye surgery is a procedure that
permanently changes the shape of the cornea (the clear covering
over the front of the eye). Before you ask, yes it does use a
laser! Before you decide on LASIK eye surgery, you should get
the facts on LASIK eye surgery.

First, before you get LASIK eye surgery, you should know that if
you where contacts, you must stop wearing them several weeks
before you go for your initial LASIK eye surgery exam (this exam
makes sure you are a candidate for LASIK). This is because
contacts misshapen your eye. If you don't stop wearing them, the
doctor will not know how to properly perform the LASIK eye
surgery. You must also have transportation to and from the
hospital the day of the surgery. This is because you may be
given a sedative and your vision will be impaired so you cannot
drive.

After the LASIK eye surgery, you will have some side effects
that will last several days. Your eyes will itch and burn. You
will feel as though something is in your eye. Your eyes may also
water. You must never touch your eyes or rub them for several
weeks after the LASIK eye surgery. To protect your eyes, you
will have to wear an eye shield while you sleep for several
weeks.

Other side effects are more long term. These can occur for 6
months or longer. These are: dry eyes, blurred vision,
difficulty seeing at night, light sensitivity, glares, and
vision fluctuations. If you cannot handle any of this, then
LASIK eye surgery is not for you.

LASIK eye surgery has many rules you must follow after surgery.
The eye shield was just one of them. You may not wear eye make
up for at least 2 weeks. You may not go swimming or in a
whirlpool or hot tub for at least 8 weeks. You must also not
play any contact sports for at least 4 weeks.

These are the most important facts you should know about LASIK
eye surgery. Be aware that even if you decide you want to have
LASIK eye surgery, the doctor may feel that you are not a
candidate for the procedure. This can be for many reasons that
the doctor will have to go over with you. Now that you know the
basics of LASIK eye surgery, take your time and do some research
before making your decision.

PAIN IN THE NECK could be from your computer

By: Hege Crowton

Did you know that spending long hours at your computer can put
your health at serious risk? Most people does not even consider
that possibility, but t does, Working at a desk is extremely
hard on your body, and I would like to share this with you so
maybe you can avoid some of the most common health risks. One of
the most common one is: NECK PAIN

Tips for NECK PAIN relief

Neck pain can really get irritating if it persists for long
periods of time. The pain can get unbearable that's why some
people succumb to taking medications or pain relievers only to
find out that they don't do them any good. Let's check out these
simple and basic tips on how to treat and relieve you from neck
pain.

1. Get spinal checkups regularly. It is very important to always
keep your spine aligned. This can ensure the proper functioning
of your neck and back, specifically the upper region. Your
chiropractor will do spinal adjustments on you. This can
decrease the stress on your thoracic and cervical spines. It
also improves the communication between your brain and all parts
of the body. As a result, a happier and healthier you.

2. Always be conscious of your posture. There are a lot of
people who exhibit poor posture. When asked to stand up
straight, they are unable to exude the proper posture anymore.
This is because they have been used to that kind of posture and
they are unaware of it already. Proper posture does not only
involve the back, as lot may think. It also includes the neck.
Poor posture, if not dealt with can give rise to neck pain as
well.

3. Exercise regularly. Exercising does not only do good to the
body's muscular and cardiovascular system but to the skeletal
system, too. For an efficient and effective program, you have to
do at least three sessions a week for about forty minutes. In
order to be more inspired to do these exercises, involve the
whole family and your friends. It will benefit, not only
yourself, but your loved ones as well.

4. Eat well and eat right. Naturally, you keep your body healthy
by eating the right food at the right amount. When you observe
proper diet and nutrition, your body will the given the
appropriate energy or fuel that can increase your endurance and
performance. It can also increase your body's immune system to
fight injuries and sickness. It can speep your recovery from
injury and it also makes you feel good. If you are having a hard
time eating right, you might as well consider taking up dietary
supplements to cover up for vitamin and mineral deficiencies in
your body.

5. Manage stress. There are a lot of techniques devised to
relieve stress, if not to eliminate it totally. Usually, stress
is carried on the upper back, the shoulders, and the neck. If
you prefer, go to your nearest chiropractor to ask about these
techniques and how to do them the right way.

6. Do not put pressure on your neck. For example, while using
the telephone, do not use your neck and shoulders to hold it
while you talk. In the office, always sit properly and keep your
neck straight by working at eye level. You can unconsciously get
neck pain during sleep because you are unaware of your
movements. You can use a cervical pillow for this. You can also
roll a towel and put it around the curve of your neck while you
sleep. Never sleep on your stomach.

7. Stretch. It is always best to do stretching if possible. In
the office or at home, you can take short breaks just to reduce
the tension. Some massage won't hurt either. It can decrease the
tension not only on your shoulders but also on your neck.

Do not let yourself get weighed down by neck pain. If you are
one of those people suffering from neck pain, do not fret. There
are a lot of simple techniques and remedies you can get and use
wherever you may be.

HEALTH RISKS DUE TO LONG HOURS AT YOUR COMPUTER

By: Hege Crowron

Did you know that spending long hours at your computer can put
your health at serious risk? Most people does not even consider
that possibility, but t does, Working at a desk is extremely
hard on your body, and I would like to share this with you so
maybe you can avoid some of the most common health risks. The
most common of them all is back pain.

BACK PAIN: Its Types and Treatments

Are you fed up with taking all the treatments for your back pain
which you feel do not work? Are you a constant patient of
physical therapists, chiropractors? Is your back pain causing
you distress and trouble because you can not do the activities
you wish you could do? Have you been advised surgery to correct
your back's structural abnormalities?

Back pain may be classified into two types: acute or short term,
and chronic. It the low back pain is short-term, it is most
probably due to lower back trauma. Certain disorders such as
arthritis may also cause acute back pain. Trauma such as sports
injury, vehicular injury, and injuries incurred around the house
may also result to back pain.

Back pain may range from simple muscle ache to stabbing pain
which results to limit in a person's flexibility and range of
motion. The person suffering from back pain may also be unable
to stand straight. If the back pain persists for over three
months, the back pain is classified as chronic. It is usually
progressive and the cause is normally difficult to pinpoint.

Surgery is not usually the mode of treatment for back pain.
Over-the-counter pain relievers helps in the reduction of
discomfort along with the intake of anti-inflammatory
medications which helps reduce inflammation. Restoration of
function is the main goal of treatment as well as restoration of
the strength to the patient's back. The treatment also aims to
stop recurrence of the back pain.

Back pain may be caused by various low back injuries. These
injuries include muscle strain, muscle spasm, ligament sprain,
problems with joint or slipped disk, and using your back muscles
in doing new activities such as lifting heavy furniture or
working on your garden. Slipped disk is caused by the nerves
bulging or pressing between the bones, which usually occurs when
lifting. Back pain is fairly common when caused by such
activities.

Some people opt for the application of cold and hot compresses
to relieve patients of back injury. These compresses are done
because they may help reduce inflammation and relieve the
patient of pain. Mobility is also significantly increased by
certain exercises, and strengthen the muscles of the back and
abdomen. These exercises can be found online, or may be
recommended by your doctors and chiropractors. In extreme cases,
surgery is recommended to help stop back pain and prevent
serious muscle injuries. But surgery is done usually as a last
resort, and if the cause of the back pain is anatomical. Some
physicians say that back pain can also be merely psychological
with some patients. It means that the patient perceives the back
pain only when there is no structural abnormality present in the
patient's body.

Individuals suffering from back pain should seek the help of a
physician to evaluate the back pain if the pain persists for ore
than 72 hours. The physician will also prescribe the appropriate
medications to relieve the patient of the symptom, or may also
advise the patient to undergo surgical procedures if need be. He
may also recommend exercises that would be less straining to the
back, and will help maintain proper posture while lifting
objects. Heavy lifting, repetitive motion and improper posture
may also cause back pain. A person's work might also predispose
an individual to developing back pain. Furniture and tools that
are designed to provide protection to the body against injury
and help maintain a healthy back are available for use at home
or at work.

It would be necessary to consult the help of a qualified
physician promptly when you feel the pain extends to your leg on
your knee area. Numbness of the leg, groin, rectal area, and
foot is also a cause of concern and should be told to a doctor
as well as development of nausea, vomiting, fever, and stomach
pain. Loss of bladder/bowel control occurring with back pain is
also warning problem that necessitates expert evaluation. Back
pain that occurs right after injury or trauma should also be
evaluated through physical examination as well as imaging and
other diagnostic procedures, more so when the patient suffers
from such intense pain that movement is severely hampered.
